How 7000 Steps Coffee Brings You the Best Beans from the Remote Hills of Northeast India
Posted on May 03 2024,
Coffee is not just a beverage for us, it is a way of life. It is a story of exploration, adventure, and passion. It is a story of how we at 7000 Steps Coffee travel to the farthest corners of the hills of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh to bring you the rarest beans. It is a story of how we at 7000 Steps Coffee support our farmers, who overcome many obstacles such as low prices, water scarcity, hilly terrain, shortage of labour and so on, to grow the finest coffee.

Meet the farmers
Our farmers belong to the ancient tribal communities of Northeastern states that have preserved their rich culture and heritage. Unlike the conventional coffee estates, our coffee farms are nestled in the wild and untouched regions where roads and communication are rare.
In the recent years we have witnessed a positive shift of coffee cultivation by the new generation of farmers who are motivated by the growing interest in Northeastern Coffee. The coffee they produce is exquisite, with unique flavors and aromas, reflecting the soil, climate of their regions and natural methods and organic practices of growing coffee.
They grow coffee on small patches of land, surrounded by lush forest. They let the coffee plants grow wild with other crops. Farmers pick the coffee cherries by hand and process them using simple techniques such as sun-drying and have started practicing washed process. However, challenges persist in the hills due to the rough terrian, where they have to carry their coffee on their backs to reach the market. Additionally, some coffee grows deep within the forest, requiring farmers to transport limited amounts at a time back home for drying.

Meet the farmers We build relationships with the farmers
We are a community of coffee lovers who are passionate about making a positive impact on the lives of the farmers who grow our coffee and the environment they depend on. We don’t just buy coffee from the farmers; we build trust and long-term relationships with them. We source our coffee directly from the farmers, eliminating the middlemen and ensuring fair and transparent prices.
We also offer training and support to the farmers, enabling them to enhance their coffee quality, productivity, and sustainability. [Read the success story of our farmers from Tura]
We also organize events and activities, such as farmer workshops, where we educate them about growing quality coffee and also to promote the culture and identity of the farmers and their regions.
By living the life of our farmers and carrying 150 coffee saplings in a Khoh (conical basket of Meghalaya), we learn to value their work.
We are proud to partner with our farmers, and we are grateful for their hard work and dedication. We celebrate their stories and honor their contributions. We invite you to join us in this journey of discovery and appreciation. Together, we can make a difference in the world, one cup of coffee at a time.
